Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff should keep focus on government, avoid becoming story himself, warns one expert.

"Nervous Nellies" in the Liberal Party who are worried by the media narrative that Grit Leader Michael Ignatieff cannot win the next election, and the very existence of the party may even be at stake should "take a valium" because history shows that many past opposition leaders have been similarly written-off, says Liberal Party President Alfred Apps.

A recent front-page story in The Toronto Star claiming that the Liberal leader was in talks to take a position at the University of Toronto incited Mr. Apps to devise a weighty 18-page analysis of polls and media coverage that he distributed to the party's national board. In the letter, he cites media reports about a possible merger between the Grits and the NDP, and another earlier Star column about a group of Bob Rae (Toronto Centre, Ont.) supporters conspiring against the leader as examples of what he says is the national media trying to support a collective thesis that Mr. Ignatieff (Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Ont.) is doomed to failure.

"If you buy into a narrative then anything that supports the narrative has credence, whether or not it has any basis in reality. And so you get somebody who spreads a rumour and if the rumour seems to fit with the narrative then it ends up on the front page. It's kind of like we've gotten to a point in political journalism where you have a huge amount that's printed that's purely speculative based on unattributed sources and people who won't actually go on the record, and all of a sudden the fact that their rumours end up as a newspaper story gives them a level of credibility they never had," Mr. Apps told The Hill Times in an interview. "If you go back to the pre-Chrétien win, there was a whole extended period where the Liberals were running behind the NDP. These things hap. en when you're in opposition. Take a Valium everybody."
