Dominic LeBlancIt is fitting in many ways that l'Université de Moncton has renamed its scholarships for academic excellence after the late Roméo LeBlanc.

Before LeBlanc died in June 2009, his last act as a servant of the public was as chancellor of the university. He also graduated from the university's forerunner, College Saint-Joseph, launching the fiercely proud Acadian's careers as an educator, journalist, federal cabinet minister and the nation's first and only Acadian governor general.

"And yet he was always one of us," UdeM president Yvon Fontaine said yesterday as the new name for the scholarships was unveiled.
