Ireland's main opposition party Fine Gael has seen its poll rating drop as nationalist rival Sinn Fein gains support, according to the Irish Independent.

The poll, the first to be published since outgoing prime minister Brian Cowen this week set 25 February as the date for a general election, showed support for centre-right Fine Gael down by four points to 30 per cent while centre-left Labour wasunchsnged at 24 per cent. Fianna Fail, which has led the government with junior coalition partners, the Greens, was unchanged at 16 per cent.

The hard-left, nationalist, Sinn Fein, which could challenge Fianna Fail for the role of Ireland's largest opposition party, has seen its support rise by three percentage points to 13 per cent, according to the poll.

Ireland's general election will be the first in Europe dominated by the eurozone debt crisis and by demands to renegotiate an unpopular European Union/International Monetary Fund bailout.

The two main opposition parties - Fine Gael and Labour - are overwhelming favourites to replace Mr Cowen's scandal-racked administration. Irish voters are itching to punish Mr Cowen's government over the economic meltdown but many blame the entire political class, including opposition parties, for failing to curb a property boom.
